Summary: Kabru sometimes wondered if other people tried as hard as he did to socialize. (Even though he knew, of course, that couldn't be the case.)

For the People with Disabilities Drabblefest on Dreamwidth! Filling the prompt, "Masking".

Kabru loved to socialize. He did. But at times, he wondered if other people tried as hard as he did. Of course, he knew better than to actually believe that they didn't. Sometimes, though, he still wondered.

Kabru insisted that the bartender to stop cleaning his room after Mickbell had scolded him for letting him do so for so long. (Mostly because Mickbell refused to leave until he did so.) But now, as he trudged down the stairs, he wondered how anybody lived by themselves.

Kabru loved to socialize, but it was exhausting. To consciously mirror and mimic what others expected of him, analyzing every choice of words and slight change in body language... it was fascinating to observe, but it required his brain to go at a hundred miles a minute. Whenever he entered his own room, he swore he could feel his mind cooling down after a day of constant overheating.

And so came the last few steps before he got into bed.

Kabru pulled the bottom of his shirt over his head, then tossed it onto the floor, with the rest of his clothes. He should have picked those up by now.

He dug into his pants pocket and slapped a business card someone gave to him onto his desk. It had miscellaneous papers of all sorts scattered all across it, with a few having fallen onto the floor. He should have organized those by now.

After tossing his shoes and pants somewhere along the way there, he dropped face-first onto the bed, taking a deep sigh. He had to sit back up to grab the blanket, which had been pushed between the bedframe and the wall, and to grab a pillow from off the ground. He should have made this by now.

Kabru noticed he'd forgotten to turn off the lights or brush his teeth. He tried to stand back up again, but found himself unable to do so, similar to how he couldn't make himself put his hand on a hot stove. He gave up, flopping onto his back and pulling the loose blanket over himself.

How did other people manage to take care of their space, even after a day of performing socially? Kabru, again, considered a world where people didn't have to try as hard as he did. But he knew that wasn't the case.

Deep down, he knew he was just incompetent.

Yeah, you're right. It WOULD be pretty fucked up if you were a swan, but you were raised by ducks and grew up never seeing a swan, or knowing that swans existed, so you just thought you were a duck with something super wrong with it.
