The Case For Comments

Given that comments can be controversial on the indie web, it’s worth pointing out the use cases for comment sections as a feature. Comment sections are particularly suited to allowing for brief high-context replies, supporting public multi-way interactions, setting a (relatively) lower threshold for participation, and allowing the blogger to define the parameters for a discussion. These are use cases that cannot all be adequately addressed by commonly-suggested alternatives such as response posts or email.

Snowflake Challenge 2026: Fave Trope

The Fave Trope Challenge: Talk about your favorite tropes in media or transformative works. (Feel free to substitute in theme/motif/cliche if "trope" doesn't resonate with you.)

I really enjoy what TVTropes calls Repression Never Ends Well—when a character tries to deny feelings or intentionally suppresses them until they finally hit their emotional limit and just let it all out. I just like the catharsis and drama of it.

So, Letterboxd...

I am marginally impressed, but no better than that. I'd say it's about what I expected, but not as good as I'd been hoping. Thoughts:

Pros: It's quite nicely laid out, and it's easy to use and to read other people's reviews. I quite like being able to keep a kind of diary of what I've watched when. Its search feature is surprisingly well thought out. Since I've already posted my reviews on here, it's very little effort to crosspost to there. I can also link to those posts without linking to this DW with all its non-film fluff. I'm continuing to use Letterboxd for these reasons.

On the downside, the community features are pretty minimal: the commenting on reviews is clunky and ultra-basic (reply notifications only sometimes work at all) and there seems little reason to follow someone you don't already know. It doesn't feel much like, well, a community. I don't really like sites you have to use for literal years before getting any real interaction at all. And which idiot decided not to let you filter reviews by language? There are some English-language films where at least half the reviews are in Spanish or Italian or whatever.

Oh, and even if you pay for Pro, which allows custom posters, you still can't display UK-standard quad posters sensibly. (40x30 inches, landscape format – the ones I use on most film posts here.) The usual Internet US-centricism. So I won't pay.

Anyway, should anyone want to see what I post over there, which is basically what I paste here with a slicker look but less interaction, here's my Letterboxd profile.

Unfortunately, the fact that Princess Tutu released in 2002 means all its contemporaneous web-published official art is either still JPEG or GIF format, with the low image and color quality those formats imply compared to PNG or SVG. Duck's eyes, in particular, seem to be so highly anti-aliased in the reference image that no pixels in them reliably match their color in the actual show.

Plenty of high quality print artwork was made, but scanned images of printings of digitally colored artwork (as Princess Tutu is digipaint) end up with noise and accuracy lose compared to the original digitally-colored art that they were presumably derived from. A page being slightly yellowed, or the scanner distorting colors, result in accuracy loss.

Modern official art posted on twitter by the character designer and original concept creator, Ikuto Itoh, uses a very different, washed out palette from the original show. (Though the worst victims of this art are the tan-skinned characters like Pique and Fakir, who end up almost as pale as Mytho...) Therefore, despite the higher raw image quality, it's absolutely useless as material to sample to get a sense for the original, canonical in-show palettes.

At least my situation with Tutu isn't as severe as with 1998!Yu-Gi-Oh!, popularly known as "Season Zero." That show's official website used jpegs for character art, and the character art is much smaller compared to Tutu on top of that. and its "redacted from existence" status in the franchise means no official art of its versions of the characters (much less art of its unique characters who don't appear in the manga or DM) will ever exist. My ass is never gonna get high definition perfect Miho Nosaka colors...

Collection of official art scavenged from the official website under the cut. If you weren't there for the y2k internet: yep, every single one of this is a non-animated GIF because we didn't have PNG. GIF was the only format with true transparency, though it was also used for fake-transparency with anti-aliasing and images that fit into the background and each other, like this. alternative was JPEG, and well... anti-aliased "fake transparency" jpegs looked like this.

should I save these to my DW account? I'm hotlinking directly from wayback RN )

355/365: Birmingham Hippodrome
Click for a larger, sharper image

I was in Birmingham today. I didn't have much time to myself, but I was able to have coffee in the Dragon, which was nice as it's the pub a group of us had our post-UK PonyCon meal in last year. A lot quieter at 10:30am today, though! Here's a photo of the Hippodrome, Birmingham's largest theatre (capacity 1,935 seats), taken with a wide-angle setting hence the odd angles. The pavement decoration is because this area is right on the edge of the city's Gay Village. And the theatre district, obviously. And Chinatown (hence the name of the Dragon). And just down from New Street station. And only a few hundred yards from the UK PonyCon 2025 venue. And rather wet this morning!

This is a very brief selection from a much larger 1988 book I found in a free box, Brazilian Women Speak: Contemporary Life Stories. It is a life story from a woman involved with Brazilian spiritualism (more specifically, umbanda). The book is still miraculously in print, and there is a screen-readable version for the print-disabled on archive.org.

Citation: Patai, Daphne. “ÂNGELA: ‘In Spiritualism There’s Real Equality.’” In Brazilian Women Speak: Contemporary Life Stories, 109-110, 120-125, 364-365. New Brunswick: Rutgers,1988.

What's Up, Doc? (1972) film poster
What's Up, Doc? (1972)

This is a 1970s attempt to recapture the energy of the screwball comedies of a third of century earlier – and on the whole it does it very well. A lot of that is down to Barbra Streisand, whose Judy Maxwell is magnetically watchable even when she's being impossibly annoying, which is much of the time. Ryan O'Neal as Dr Howard Bannister looks just enough like a younger Michael Caine to be mildly disconcerting, but he does well too. Not all the jokes land perfectly, but there are so many of them that you don't have to wait long for a better one. The plot is absurd, but it's meant to be so that's okay.

An absolutely fantastic car chase scene, like a cross between Bullitt and Wacky Races and one which instantly became a favourite. The weak link is Eunice Burns (Madeline Kahn), not because of her acting but because of the dated and embarrassing "hey, his actual fiancée is dowdy and whiny, isn't that amusing?" running joke; one late line about her in a courtroom scene is truly awful. Fortunately the rest is so enjoyable as to make this a largely thoroughly entertaining hour and a half. ★★★★

In better news...

354/365: Real Ale Tavern, Bewdley
Click for a larger, sharper image

...here is tonight's rather belated photo. This is the Real Ale Tavern, a rather boringly named pub in Bewdley. And yes, it is known as the Rat sometimes! The building was once Barclays Bank – I can remember it being that – but it's been a pub for some years now. To the left you can just see part of the HealthPoint Pharmacy; to the right you can just see the side road that leads to the town centre car parks.

Experiment in displaying samples of character pallets. I'd isolated these palettes in the past, but Tumblr doesn't support spreadsheets, meaning I had to post the samples in a clunky image form.

Samples from "Prequel Trilogy" era official artwork (Original trilogy artwork has jpeg artifacting, clean pngs only show up on official websites Last Specter onwards), and from the official LINE stickers.

I found this Cinderella from 2000 on YouTube and thought it would be fun to share it here, especially for the benefit of those of you in poor benighted countries that don't do panto. Apologies for the iffy technical quality (360p, aspect ratio etc) but in all honesty if you require beautifully slick presentation then you probably won't enjoy panto anyway! This isn't the best panto I've ever seen, and I think it loses steam a little in the second half, but it's certainly far from the worst. And yes, non-panto-people, it absolutely is required for there to be about four hundred dodgy innuendos in front of an audience of eight-year-olds. That's how panto works. I don't even like innuendo humour, and I still make an exception here. Have fun, boys and girls!

Mori: since I wasn’t going to be much good for anything else today, I decided to make bone broth, since it takes a gazillion hours and requires nothing but you sitting to make sure it don’t catch fire. You just take your bones and various veggie odds’n’ends (I had about a chicken and a half worth of bones, plus carrot stubs, a onion, garlic, bay leaves, peppercorns), pour water over ‘em, and simmer for a million years. I been simmering that shit for going on seven hours now; the recipe I got said up to twelve but no way can I stay up to 2AM for that.

It’s still pretty weak, but it’s all my body wants and I swear this is the most delicious shit I done ever put in my mouth. My body is ENTHUSIASTIC about it, and it been enthusiastic about jack fucking shit today.

I AM NEVER NOT MAKING BONE BROTH EVER AGAIN.

Getting away from the latest Trump absurdities, not a lot was going on in Bewdley today. Yes, again. We're like that, you know. I did pop into Tesco Express, but that's unlikely to be of interest to anyone much! At least I remembered to take a photo, and here it is. As the plaque says, this was donated a year and a half ago by Action for Cyprus. From memory, I think the people who run the Merchants chippy are Cypriot in origin – it's quite common for chip shops to be run by Cypriots – and this olive tree is just around the corner from the place.

List of "Vanilla+" mods for Spore

malymin: A pink and purple catlike creature made in Spore. (Sporecat)

I consider a "vanilla+" mod to be a mod wherein sharable assets made using it (such as a a spore creature, or a sim or lot in The Sims) are completely sharable with people who have no mods whatsoever installed in their game.

The Petz Community has a long history of hexed (modded) adoptable pets designed to be sharable to people without the installation of entire new breedfiles (which also have a long history in the PC). This is in part possible through a quirk of how Petz handles character model rendering, but Petz being one of the first computer games I ever played influenced my tastes in mods for other games.

  • Full Cell Parts Mod: allows cell parts in the "main" creature editor, and unlocks the disabled morph handles for those parts. A successor to the older "Cell Parts Xtended" mod. Is a package file and therefore can be installed manually (unlike all the other mods on this list, which are sporemod files), but can be easily installed and uninstalled with Spore ModAPI Launcher Kit.
  • Advanced CE: Free movement of creature parts, detached from spine or limbs. Requires Universal Property Enhancer, and by extension, the Spore ModAPI Launcher Kit.
  • Togglestacker: A successor to SporeStacker. Allows parts that normally cannot be stacked on each other to be stacked - for example, placing wings on the tips of a creature's horns.
  • Enchanced Color Picker: Allows a full color wheel (like you'd use in an art program), as well as entering hexidecimal color codes, when coloring in any creator or outfitter. A successor to Raptor's Colors.
  • Delimbiter: more ways to morph the size and shape of both fleshy and exoskeletal limbs. A sucessor to "Sneky Leg Day." Requires Universal Property Enhancer, and by extension, the Spore ModAPI Launcher Kit.
  • Share-safe Music: Allows the adventure editor to access more music tracks already present in SPORE's files; adventures will still play the selected music even when pollinated to unmodded games. In a sense, this is an Adventure Creator equivalent to how Full Cell Parts increases your palette of options in the Creature Creator.
  • Advanced Creature Paint: Allows the player to apply building/vehicle paints to individual creature and outfitter parts, on top of the standard body/coat/detail color channels of the creature. Creatures made with the mod can safely pollinate to other games, but will not display their building/vehicle paints without the mod installed. As far as I know, this is the only vanilla-safe mod that functions like this.

US Treasury Secretary Bessent: It's a complete canard to think President Trump's action on Greenland is due to the Nobel Peace Prize.

Well sure, no evidence for that at all. Except of course the letter Trump wrote to the Norwegian PM saying "Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace".

Yes, I was surprised too. He can write?!

Oh, and also: he literally writes diplomatic messages like Truth Social posts.

Lesson for future constitutional scholars: all the checks and balances in the world are no bloody use if nobody will bloody well use them.
