So, that Pokemon teraleak
Oct. 13th, 2024 12:45 amI didn't have "Cyrus is the first confirmed autistic Pokemon character" on my 2024 bingo card. Right after I made my forum post about canonically disabled Pokemon characters on the Bulbagarden forums, too... And I can't even update it because I can't discuss the leak on posts other than the designated one!! Damn.
They should confirm N as autistic next... For fun.
I think it's super, super cool to see the concept docs for all the different Pokemon characters! Like, we have official descriptions of the Gen 3 protagonists' personalities, as well as a ton of information about the specifics of Pokemon characters' points of inspiration, as well as their intended races. I've seen a lot of folks assume Iris is black, for example, but she's apparently actually Middle Eastern! Skyla is Hispanic, and Clay is Japanese (despite many people assuming he's American, thanks to the cowboy hat).
There's also now a written, clear origin of the Pokemon universe... it's so exciting!!!
It was Arceus, not Mew, who was born first, its egg appearing in space. When it cracked open and Arceus was born, the scattered pieces of the shell transformed into giants and attacked Arceus, who defeated them, with great effort. Wounded, Arceus made two alter egos (Dialga and Palkia), gathering the bodies of the beasts and pouring its blood into them. Arceus then commanded they create a world of prosperity for their people, and fell into a deep sleep.
With Dialga and Palkia's birth, time and light were born. They loved each other very much, and they had 3 children: Uxie, Mespirit, and Azelf, from whom colors and contours, a sense of calm, and a happy tone echoing were born. ("Colors and contours" may be a mistranslation, or it may be speaking metaphorically.) Dialga and Palkia gave the three of them the seed of life, and commanded them to nurture it.
The seed sprouted, then grew into a tree of life. However, it continued to grow, until it filled every bit of space and nobody was able to move. So, Uxie, Mespirit and Azelf had no choice but to cut down the tree of life, where it collapsed and shattered into three pieces. The three of them prayed, lamenting the death of the tree, which caused three deities to descend upon the pieces of the tree of life: Groudon, Kyogre, and Rayquaza.
The three deities caused the tree to transform into the earth, the sea and the sky. Rayquaza transformed into the main pillar which holds up the heavens. Its shadow as it soared through the sky became a God named Giratina.
It feels so, so old myth-like! Of course, parts of this were changed in gen 4's release, and I doubt all of it is internally considered canon anymore, but it's still really interesting~
And this isn't even close to all of the information. There was a terabyte of data leaked! The Insomniac leak, from back in December, was 1.6 terabytes, and it took people MONTHS to sort through everything, so I suspect new info to be coming out semi-regularly for at least a little while, as the data is sorted through! And, of course, it's very exciting to me that the data apparently goes up to May of this year!! Which means we might see the beta content for the Galarian and Paldean human characters!!!
All of this comes with the caveat, of course, that it makes me sad that such a huge leak happened right when GameFreak was finally getting to take their time with a game. So much information about upcoming games was leaked! Honestly, I only really like leaks when it's, like, a week before the game releases anyways, or when it's stuff we would have never seen without them, like character reference documents, and beta designs... Avoiding spoilers is going to such a pain... Not to mention the fact that GameFreak employees' personal info was doxxed in this leak!!
I'm extremely excited all of this behind-the-scenes stuff, don't get me wrong! Just don't get the impression that I condone what the leakers did.
