Challenge #13

Talk about a community space you like. It doesn't need to be your favorite, or the one where you spend the most time (although it certainly can be). Maybe it's even one that you've barely visited. But talk about that space and how it helps support fannish community.

I feel like I find a way to talk about the indie web every other question when it comes to the Snowflake Challenge, but it really is my favorite way of experiencing fandom these days. Between the fandom webring, the fanfiction webring, and fanlistings, it's easier than ever to find the websites of fannish creators, who are able to present what they create any way they desire on their website. It encourages more long-form communication, such as emails and response posts, which, itself, encourages making interaction more meaningful. Each website being so personalized means that visiting each person's site is an entirely unique experience, as well, rather than feeling like visiting mildly-customizable templates.

Everybody should make their own website and put their fannish stuff on it NOW!!!

Not quite "fandom" ([profile] kallium's talked a bit about the Petz Community in their own Snowflake Challenge entries, tho), but if you like indie web directories of fansites...

Check the Petz Site Directory out. ;)

The Petz Site Directory is nice in that, in addition to current sites, is also contains links to a few Wayback archives of fansites that are no longer online, but are historically important to the community and whose fan-content is mostly archived via wayback. VPZ Research Center is one of the linked archived sites that was an important site in the 2000s, it's got some cute downloads of anime and videogame critters (ever wanted your own pet Chocobo, or the dog from Howl's Moving Castle?) on its "fantasy" pages.

The Petz Community's fansite culture is so big that the typical way to refer to popular creators is not by any social media username, but by a "nickname @ sitename" format, with or without spaces. For example, the Petz Site Directory itself is run by Megan@Oasis. You can see the citation format in action on Petz Park, a Petz webring with a cute interactive website widget attached that is programmed and run by skissors @ Alive Enough. (Pet the puppy and kitty gifs. You know you want to.)
