Sometimes I find 100x100 icons I've made (often months ago) that I have very little memory of making and have never shared anywhere. So this is an attempt to release these into the world at large, lol. They're mostly Pokémon icons with some other stuff thrown in.

Credit is appreciated and I'd love to know if you use them! :) All of these are from last year.

Under a cut just so this doesn't get too long! )

Drive-by ad before I go: I'm organizing a countdown event for the release of Pokémon Legends Z-A! If you're an artist or know artists who'd be interested, don't hesitate to check it out! 💚

Today I finished watching Patlabor and it was a very satisfying series to say the least, even though the final episode felt more like a normal instance than having closure after all the aventures and misadventures the team went through. I do believe the episode before the last would had been better left as THE last episode since it closed so nicely in comparison, but I digress.

But for now...

Mission accomplished.

Our theme for July is working together!

This round is for fanworks that feature characters working together to achieve a common goal or—and this is not necessarily the same thing—fanworks set in the workplace.

The tag for this round is: theme: working together

If you're just joining us, be sure to check out our policy on content notes. Content notes aren't required, but they're nice to include in your recs, especially if a fanwork has untagged content that readers may wish to know about in advance.

Echo Zines also has prompts -- a Zine Month bingo -- and has collected up a cute third set geared around minizines; both of which prompt sets can be found here ~

[community profile] makezines doesn't have an activity planned, yet -- but what about a low-key sort of thing? :3?

Lots of folks want to see more activity on Dreamwidth. While researching community activities, I came across the idea of thematic meet and greet events. That seemed like something which might work here, given a membership of several hundred people and a new theme each month. So I made one for this month's theme. It gives people a place to meet folks with similar interests, and to squee about the current theme.

Here is the basic outline. Fill in as much or as little of it as you wish, depending on your interests as they relate to the Westerns Bingo Fest.

Art Books: Edgar Degas

I just finished this book this morning! And I wanted to write about him and his works while it was still fresh in my mind. He was born July 19th, 1834. My personal thoughts I feel that Edgar Degas was best known for his ballerina oil paintings and paste works. All sorts of different scenes just from this one topic. Like before while taking a stretch to during a play - each one I enjoyed and felt like he captured a-lot of emotions related to that activity, those have been my favorite. I thought it was interesting also how he was a photographer. And he did some sculptures which turned out quite well. Edgar was an impressionist (I feel most if not all of these books they are impressionists which I'm okay with!). His life seemed to be quite and towards the end lonely. He believed an artist couldn't' have a personal life. In fact this caused other friends to distance themselves from him.

Have any of you heard of Edgar Degas and have seen his works?

Happy OC Monday! ^ o^)/ Haven't done one of these in a while and I was feeling the itch to talk about some OCs, so *Mario voice* LETSA GO!!

What is OC Monday?
A trend started by penbrydd on Pillowfort, it's an excuse to talk about your original characters, or to invite your followers to ask about them every Monday!

Buckle up, fellas, we're talking about OC TRAUMA this Monday!! 😅 (I'll make sure to omit the gory details and keep it brief!!)

To start with a prompt from this week's post: Does your OC have any piercings?

One thing that's a constant in all of my OC designs is that they all have piercings to some degree, with the most basic being one or two lobe piercings on each ear! To list some specifics:

Fafnir has two lobe piercings on each ear, as well as a septum ring piercing! (It has a small pearl in it in remembrance of his mother!)

Theo not only has two lobe piercings in each ear, but a bar piercing through the top of his left ear, and a set of snake bite piercings!! He also wants a septum, and ends up getting that later down the line after graduating college and marrying his husband.

Rem has two lobe piercings on each ear, but only wears one set on his left ear to match his boyfriend.

Vha (surprisingly) just has snake bites. xD (We need to get you a few more piercings, son...)

And now to catch up on last week's prompt: Has your OC ever witnessed something that fundamentally changed them?

Won't get too much into it since it would veer too much into Big Sads territory, but Rem unfortunately got to witness his family's deaths when he was 8yo and it DRASTICALLY changed how he approached people going forward, even more so considering that he was made to feel like the "black sheep" while already dealing with survivor's guilt. As he gets older, he gets into therapy and is able to overcome the trauma of that night, just was a JOURNEY to get there. xD

Siza'li and Vha also qualify for the "Witnessed My Family Die and All I Got Was This Stupid Survivor's Guilt" trope. xD Both used to be very grumpy and closed off, but are doing much better!! (Siza'li is still kinda closed off, though. He takes MUCH longer to make progress in that regard. xD)

My OC Sil'verah witnessed his mother performing a very dark summoning ritual when he was 10yo, and for a while he was secretly terrified of any black magic or void entities. As an adult not so much, but as a child he was having nightmares almost every night.

Fafnir also technically qualifies for this since he lost so much of his family to disease and war, and it lead to him becoming self-sacrificial and closed off for a while.

Joy: The Interdisciplinary Edition

I am always on the lookout for academic works that talk about the kinds of joy that I feel are characteristic of fandom. There are a lot of books about art, literature, music, etc. but their analysis doesn’t often take into account the pleasures of those activities (Barthes notwithstanding.)

One book that I like a lot for the way in which it conceptualizes joy in collectivity is William H. McNeill’s Keeping Together in Time: Dance and Drill in Human History.  McNeill says something that, to me, is obviously true but rarely said: that people like to move together! The book is about the emotional bonding that happens when people move, together, in time: McNeill’s two examples are dance and drill (by which he means military drill - so Beyonce gives us a two-fer with Formation! ) Obviously this is a pleasure familiar to anyone who likes dance of any kind, or synchronised swimming, or drum circles, or marching bands, or yoga or tai chi, or participating in church services, or cheerleading, or doing the wave. I used McNeill in my Vidding book–but I also think of fandom’s love of a good power walk on any TV show! (For a great example check out the last few beats of the Clucking Belles’ Vid “A Fannish Taxonomy of Hotness”, below - power walks are the subject of the last section.)

Some orienting quotes from the start of the book:

Reflecting on my odd, surprising, and apparently visceral response to close-order drill, and recalling what little I knew about war dances and other rhythmic exercises among hunters and gatherers, I surmised that the emotional response to drill was an inheritance from prehistoric times, when our ancestors had danced around their camp fires before and after faring forth to hunt wild and dangerous animals…. (p.3)

The specifically military manifestations of this human capability are of less importance than the general enhancement of social cohesion that village dancing imparted to the majority of human beings from the time that agriculture began.  Two corollaries demand attention. First, through recorded history, moving and singing together made collective tasks far more efficient. Without rhythmical coordination of the muscular effort required to haul and pry heavy stones into place, the pyramids of Egypt and many other famous monuments could nnot have been built.  Second, I am convinced that long before written records allowed us to know anything precise about human behavior, keeping together in time became important for human evolution, allowing early human groups to increase their size, enhance their cohesion, and assure survival by improving their success in guarding territory, securing food, and nurturing the young. (p.4)

Our television screens show continuing pervasive manifestations of the human penchant for moving together in time. American football crowds, South African demonstrators, patriotic parades, and religious rituals of every description draw on the emotional effect of rhythmic movements and gestures. So of course do dancing, military  drill, and the muscular exercises with which, it is said, workers in Japanese factories begin each day. Yet, so far as I can discover, scientific investigation of what happens to those who engage in such behavior remains scant and unsystematic. (p. 5)

It reached 31 °C today, and I wasn't too pleased about that as it was far too hot to do anything. Sadly there were things I had to do. At least it wasn't the 34 °C one forecast had suggested a few days ago. The sunshine was hot, but I still preferred it to the overcast humidity of yesterday. I had an ice cream cone (toffee and vanilla) in town, but walking back home was still a pretty unpleasant experience. Today's photo is of the Hop Pole Inn, a popular and mildly gastro pub on the western side of Bewdley. I've been there, but only rarely. It's not that big inside but has a fairly large beer garden.
