Joy: The Interdisciplinary Edition

I am always on the lookout for academic works that talk about the kinds of joy that I feel are characteristic of fandom. There are a lot of books about art, literature, music, etc. but their analysis doesn’t often take into account the pleasures of those activities (Barthes notwithstanding.)

One book that I like a lot for the way in which it conceptualizes joy in collectivity is William H. McNeill’s Keeping Together in Time: Dance and Drill in Human History.  McNeill says something that, to me, is obviously true but rarely said: that people like to move together! The book is about the emotional bonding that happens when people move, together, in time: McNeill’s two examples are dance and drill (by which he means military drill - so Beyonce gives us a two-fer with Formation! ) Obviously this is a pleasure familiar to anyone who likes dance of any kind, or synchronised swimming, or drum circles, or marching bands, or yoga or tai chi, or participating in church services, or cheerleading, or doing the wave. I used McNeill in my Vidding book–but I also think of fandom’s love of a good power walk on any TV show! (For a great example check out the last few beats of the Clucking Belles’ Vid “A Fannish Taxonomy of Hotness”, below - power walks are the subject of the last section.)

Some orienting quotes from the start of the book:

Reflecting on my odd, surprising, and apparently visceral response to close-order drill, and recalling what little I knew about war dances and other rhythmic exercises among hunters and gatherers, I surmised that the emotional response to drill was an inheritance from prehistoric times, when our ancestors had danced around their camp fires before and after faring forth to hunt wild and dangerous animals…. (p.3)

The specifically military manifestations of this human capability are of less importance than the general enhancement of social cohesion that village dancing imparted to the majority of human beings from the time that agriculture began.  Two corollaries demand attention. First, through recorded history, moving and singing together made collective tasks far more efficient. Without rhythmical coordination of the muscular effort required to haul and pry heavy stones into place, the pyramids of Egypt and many other famous monuments could nnot have been built.  Second, I am convinced that long before written records allowed us to know anything precise about human behavior, keeping together in time became important for human evolution, allowing early human groups to increase their size, enhance their cohesion, and assure survival by improving their success in guarding territory, securing food, and nurturing the young. (p.4)

Our television screens show continuing pervasive manifestations of the human penchant for moving together in time. American football crowds, South African demonstrators, patriotic parades, and religious rituals of every description draw on the emotional effect of rhythmic movements and gestures. So of course do dancing, military  drill, and the muscular exercises with which, it is said, workers in Japanese factories begin each day. Yet, so far as I can discover, scientific investigation of what happens to those who engage in such behavior remains scant and unsystematic. (p. 5)

It reached 31 °C today, and I wasn't too pleased about that as it was far too hot to do anything. Sadly there were things I had to do. At least it wasn't the 34 °C one forecast had suggested a few days ago. The sunshine was hot, but I still preferred it to the overcast humidity of yesterday. I had an ice cream cone (toffee and vanilla) in town, but walking back home was still a pretty unpleasant experience. Today's photo is of the Hop Pole Inn, a popular and mildly gastro pub on the western side of Bewdley. I've been there, but only rarely. It's not that big inside but has a fairly large beer garden. Note weather!

Aethermancer

So, lately I've been playing the free demo for Aethermancer.

It's a in indie roguelite - which, yes, are a dime a dozen these days. But it's also a monster trainer, or monster battler, or "-mon game", or whatever you want to use to refer to "the genre that Pokemon is the most famous example of." (Not the first - technically the Megami Tensei franchise involves recruiting monster to use in battle, and it predates Pokemon by a good bit.)

I enjoyed the developer's previous outing, Monster Sanctuary. It had some good ideas, but I also felt like I needed a guide on hand in order to enjoy the main draw of the game - triple battles where synergy between team-mates is key, and stacking passive abilities allows for powerful snowball effects.

Compared to its predecessor (and to the other indie monster game I've played, Cassette Beasts) Aethermancer makes it much more clear to a "novice" player how you're supposed to use monsters. Right at the outset, you see that your monster has three "types" - not elements, but mechanical niches it represents. These types may be debuffs (burn, poison, etc), buffs (dodge, regeneration, etc), "critical" (increasing chance and effects of crits), and "purge" (remove enemy's "aether", the elemental action-casting resource reminiscent of MtG's "mana"), but they also include support niches like "aether", "heal", "shield", and "tank." Each of a monster's three types contribute to its pool of "traits" (passive powers) and "actions" (selectable moves that cost aether to perform).

In addition, the introduction of "maverick" traits and actions - which become added to a monster's pool based on what teamates are present when it levels up - makes synergistic team-building between disimilar monsters easier than it was in Monster Sanctuary. A "tank" monster in a party with a "burn" monster will gain access to "tank+burn" abilities that synergistic link the two concepts. Meanwhile, in Monster Sanctuary, your ability to, say, add a healing monster to a Shock team was limited by monsters whose predefined skill trees supported those concepts simultaneously.

In the demo, I've found the Burn archetype (which one of the starters, Cherufe, is a member of) to be fairly strong. While there are other archetypes with available passives that trigger when Aether is spent, and passives that generate aether when they trigger, nothing seems to have as powerful a feedback loop as the following combination, which are available to all Burn monsters under all circumstances:

Burning Fire

Aura: For every 3 Fire Aether consumed by allies: Applies Burn to all enemies.

[...]

Kindle

Aura: For every 4 Burn applied to enemies: Generates Fire Aether.

And this combination only gets stronger the more burn-inflicting Traits you have, or after gaining access to party-wide burn inflicting Actions, or with the flexibility that Cosmic Fire introduces to the feedback loop by letting you generate Wild (wildcard) Aether with Kindle and spend Wild Aether to trigger Burning Fire, or by utilizing Burn Conversion and Stoke the Fire to convert Burn stacks into EVEN MORE Fire (or Wild, with Cosmic Fire) Aether to spend EVEN more to inflict EVEN MORE burn.

This is even before getting into the ways in which Cherufe's signature Trait synergizes with literally every burn inducing trait...

We're having to rebuild the search server again (previously, previously). It will take a few days to reindex all the content.

Meanwhile search services should be running, but probably returning no results or incomplete results for most queries.

6. Make a summer book list

Item 6: Make a summer book list

The first item I want to (sort of) tick of the bucket list is my summer reading! I'm going to be straight up, I won't be picking much deep stuff, I just want to have fun with my reading this summer. I usually read a lot of non-fiction so I've been craving some nostalgic fictional stories.

1. Circle Of Magic 2: Tris' Book by Tamora Pierce
Sometime about two years ago I got really into Circle of Magic after I finished the first book. I hadn't the chance to continue the series until now. I'm really excited to finish the whole thing and maybe read more of Tamora Pierce's work.

2. Rumble Fish by S.E. Hinton
I finished The Outsiders and That Was Then, This Is Now earlier this spring and I loved both so I'm going to read everything S.E. Hinton has written now I think.

3. The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares
I liked the movie so I think I'm probably gonna enjoy the books too. Plus it's like the only book actually set in the summer. I just want that 2000s shit right now.

4. Whip It/ Derby Girl by Shauna Cross
I heard the book isn't really good but it's one of my fave movies of all time so I want to give it a chance.

5. Notes To Boys by Pamela Ribon
I'm not sure how crazy I will be about this one (ew boys!! joking) but I really like Pamela Ribon so I wanna see how her fiction stuff goes.

6. The Tail of Emily Windsnap (Re-read) by Liz Kessler
I'm crazy about mermaids and I loved this book as a kid. I don't remember how far I got in the series so I think I'll re-read it this summer and try to get as far as I can into the books. I guess this one's kind of summer-themed.

7. Jedi Quest: Path to Truth by Jude Watson
I'm a huge Star Wars fan (pre-Disney, but I will allow Andor a pass) and I always wanted to read these books but I could never find them when I was a kid. Well Im a grown ass adult so it's time to finally get through these middle grade books.

8. Masters of Atlantis by Charles Portis
I really liked Norwood, Portis is a funny guy. This one called out to me strongest from his bibliography.

If the reading goes well I may add some more books but so far this is it. They're all pretty short so I think I'll be able to actually read them this summer instead of starting and then forgetting about them for months.

Because we live like we will have to move or go couch-surfing at a moment’s notice, we have gotten pretty ruthless about our physical possessions. Nothing destroys sentimentality like having to lug it on your back over and over! So many of our childhood beloved books have been weeded; we got what we needed from them and thus liberated them unto new adventures.

There is one exception: an omnibus of the first three Callahan’s books, by Spider Robinson.so here’s to you, Mr. Robinson, loonies love you more than you will know! )

Winterfest in July

Welcome to Winter Fest in July. [personal profile] spiralicious and I ([personal profile] vexed_wench) will be your guest host for the month.

We love all things winter and Christmas. We realize that not everyone has fandoms or original universes that support that. We tried to come up with a few lists that could fit into almost any ‘verse.

Feel free to use any prompt how they speak to you. I have them separated just to make the list a bit more manageable.

For example, if you use a movie or music prompt, feel free to just work off the title or you can remix the movie, it's up to you. Or however else it moves you.

As usual, there will be banners at the end of the month. Also, fills can be made of anything; fic, poetry, vid, podfics, recs, or handcrafts. Art, icons, and wallpapers are nice as well. If you think of any medium not listed, that’s cool too.

This is a winter fest-themed month, so why not share some of your favorites and rec yours or someone else's work.

Anything goes this month. The only limit is your imagination.

And once again, thank you for being our guest. Cue the candle song!

There is a public card at the bottom of this post, or feel free to make your own here.

You can mix or match any of the prompts below or pick your own if you like.

Most of all, we hope you have fun!

I mostly post about: Being Gen-X, Canadian, ramblings of day to day life, my mental health, sometimes the state of the world (though I try to keep that to a minimum), what I'm currently reading, Nelson shenanigans (my cat)

My hobbies are: I knit and crochet; writing, watching movies/television (mostly drama and British telly), reading, 'cozy' colouring with alcohol markers, music (love to listen to new things)

My fandoms are: I used to be very into fandoms 10 or so years ago, but not so much anymore. It can be exhausting.

I'm looking to meet people who: above all, are kind. 20+ of age, and have some interests in common. It would be ideal if you like to comment on entries.

My posting schedule tends to be: aiming for daily, but likely a few times a week. I'm journaling again at the suggestion of my therapist.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: the usual: racism, anti-LGBTQIA+. I used to be a big Harry Potter fan, but no longer and I generally stay away from those who still embrace the fandom, JKR, and the books/movies.

Before adding me, you should know: I'm a very kind and sensitive person and try to be thoughtful and respectful when commenting on others entries, so I hope to receive the same in return. Also, I have an odd sense of humour and I use "LOL" and "<3" a lot.

Reccer's Notes: A lovely, quietly perceptive story about two slightly lonely women finding commonalities and starting to become friends - one of Lord Peter's more successful machinations. It's beautifully written and the author's note at the end is interesting if you're a fan of the Wimsey books.

Came accross this cropped screenshot someone mentioned was from Patlabor on which two very familiar looking girls are passing by. Not sure of this was a dedicated cameo or just coincidence, but am trying to see what episode and sweies from Patlabor its from.

Its still pretty neat.

EDIT: Thanks to a reply below, I got told its most likely from episode 2 of the Patlabor OVA.

As if I didn’t ALREADY have enough ships (thanks to all my OC x Canon ships xD), thanks to Persona 5X I now have a NEW ship to MELT over ISHCROFIROOROR

I’ve already (surprisingly) been enjoying P5X thus far, and already had a lot of love for the original P5 protag Ren Amamiya, but seeing him and the P5X protag Nagisa Kamishiro interact has for some reason altered my brain chemistry in such a way that I’ve been thinking about them NONSTOP xD

Unfortunately there’s little to nothing in terms of art and writing for them, so excuse me while I sit in my corner of the fog far away from the world to create it myself!! 😤

(I DID find one absolutely, positively beautiful fic for them called Unspoken, Understood that I won’t hesitate to recommend just in case you’d like to read it! It was short and sweet, and the words flowed so beautifully that I read it twice! xD)

Outside of my crazy babbling for a new ship, hope everybody’s been hanging in there ok. ❤️

EDIT 7/5/25: So I'm nbot sure why the link code to the fic just WAS NOT working no matter what I did, so let's see if we can try just the link by itself instead b/c I REALLY love this fic and I wanna make sure I reccommend it somehow!!

Sunset, Bewdley, 29th June 2025
149/365: Sunset towards the Wyre Forest
Click for a larger, sharper image

A very warm (27 °C) day today, but disappointingly cloudy, which made it feel very humid and uncomfortable. I had enough time for a pint of perry at lunchtime, which was nice -- Wetherspoons is doing a Craft Cider Festival, and perry qualifies as it's pear cider. Specifically, I drank Midnight Special from Mr Whitehead's, a Hampshire company. A new one on me: medium-sweet and easy drinking, and although you wouldn't call it especially complex it did slip down well on a very warm day in the beer garden. My photo from today is of sunset during a short walk I was taking on the western fringes of Bewdley. This photo was taken at 9:56 pm, and I'm looking towards the Wyre Forest on the horizon.
