621 Good, 626 Bad: “Stitch: Experiment 626” For PlayStation 2

Developer: High Voltage Software
Publishers: Disney Interactive, Sony Computer Entertainment
Genres: Action, Shooter
Release Date: 2002

With “Lilo & Stitch: Trouble in Paradise” being a loose retelling of the movie’s plot and “Lilo & Stitch” for the Game Boy Advance giving us a post-movie story, “Stitch: Experiment 626” rounds it out by being a prequel to the movie, centered around Experiment 626 and Jumba Jookiba before their eventual imprisonment and judgment by the Galactic Council in the beginning of the movie. We thus have ourselves a very unique entry to the Lilo & Stitch series.

I reference the manual of this game a fair amount; you can read the manual on the Internet Archive.

Rating: Teen +
Length: 3,235 for the fic, 23 minutes for the podfic
Creator Links: [livejournal.com profile] insaneidiot [archiveofourown.org profile] reena_jenkins
Theme: Working Together

Summary: The crew of the Enterprise is subjected to a compulsory seminar on Inappropriate Workplace Behavior, and Jim Kirk finds this to be particularly challenging.

Content notes: In addition to Kirk being inappropriate in the ways one might expect from canon, the seminar leader is stereotyped in a way that might be considered offensive.

Reccer's Notes: I'm reccing both the story and the podfic here because the story is only on LJ, and the writer does not seem to be active anymore. The podficcer, however, is still around, and the pod is hosted on AO3, which may be more accessible for some. It is also the way I first encountered this story.

Now that we have all that out of the way, I can gush about how hilarious this story is because Jim Kirk + Starfleet bullshit is fertile territory, and I always laugh really loudly when listening to the podfic. Jim is so deeply wounded by any attempt to rein in his obnoxiousness, inappropriateness, and mouthiness. The best thing about this fic, though, is Jim's relationship with his crew. Throughout the seminar, we see the dynamics play out, and it becomes clear that the seminar was put together for a very different kind of workplace and a very different kind of crew. As Jim puts it: "All the team unity and 'synergy' exercises in the universe aren’t going to build real trust or strong relationships amongst a crew."

As you might expect, Jim gets kicked down a couple notches by the seminar leader, but the tables turn in an unexpected way by the end of the seminar.

Reena, as usual, does a wonderful job with the podfic.

Blackberry, 6th July 2025
156/365: First wild blackberry of the season
Click for a larger, sharper image

I always look forward to the start of the blackberry season. I'm not a proper forager, so blackberries are the only fruit I regularly pick wild. In fact, they're about the only fruits I don't really eat much at all out of season; it's extremely rare for me to buy tinned blackberries, for example. The law in this country allows non-destructive foraging, as long as it is for personal use and not for commercial purposes. Obviously you can't go into someone's garden and pick their carefully planted fruits, but a wild bush by a right of way? Yep. Anyway, here's a photo of the very first blackberry I picked this year: 6th July is a bit earlier than usual, which says something about our dry, warm summer so far.

In other news, it's always irritating when people do idiotic things that mean I have to come down on the side of other people I dislike. There's been an example of this today: the leader of Brighton & Hove Council, Bella Sankey, has said she has reported Rod Liddle to the police for a Spectator article in which he said things would be improved by a nuke on Brighton and another on Glastonbury. I detest Rod Liddle, for a whole variety of reasons -- but in this specific case, the Spectator article in question is very obviously satirical and about as worthy of police attention as John Betjeman's "Come, friendly bombs, and fall on Slough!" was -- which is to say, not at all. Please, Ms Sankey, don't make me defend Rod Liddle again. It's really not something I want to be doing.

Trying to finagle a way to make a more considered version of this guide... it seems some of the information I got from the Sims Wiki was... inaccurate? Or at the very least outdated.

Hmmm.

EDIT:

Current analysis suggests that, in the base game, every possible 'special' grafting combination can be held within a minimum space of:

  • two 2x2 garden planters, which each hold four small plants or one tree (eight plants)
  • three 1x1 garden pots, which each hold one small plant or tree (one plant, two trees)
  • total number of squares occupied: 11

With the vertical planters (which are very space efficient, but cannot hold snapdragons, lilies, or orchids) from Eco Lifestyle:

  • four 1x1 vertical planters, which each hold two small plants (seven plants + one free slot)
  • four 1x1 garden pots (two plants, two trees)
  • total number of squares occupied: 8

The wiki claims that Dragon Fruit can't be held in vertical planters, but this seems to be...wrong?

Further notes.

In my original post, I claimed that growth rate influences how often product is generated. This is untrue - it was true in old builds on the game, but in the modern version of the game all plants produce product at 5 am every morning, regardless of growth rate. It may still have some influence on how long a plant takes to mature, though.

In an outdoor garden, with Seasons installed, the optimal grafts (listing the "base" plant first, and the "donating" plant second) for max production days are:

  • Snapdragon (Spring/Fall) + Strawberry (Spring) = Dragon Fruit
  • Snapdragon (Spring/Fall) + Dragon Fruit (Fall) = Cow Berry
  • Snapdragon (Spring/Fall) + Lily (Summer) = Orchid
  • Orchid (Spring/Winter) + Pomegranate (Winter) = Death Flower
  • Bluebells (Spring/Summer) + Strawberry (Spring) = Grapes
  • Rose (Spring/Fall) + Grapes (Fall) = Bonsai Buds
  • Sage (All Seasons) + Basil (Summer, Fall) = Parsley
  • Chrysanthemum (Summer/Fall) + Tulip (Spring) = Bird of Paradise
  • Lemon (All Seasons) + Pear (Fall/Winter) = Plantain

Additional notes:

  • For an indoor garden with vertical planters, the first two snapdragon recipes should be reversed.
  • Daisies (Spring) and Strawberries (Spring) are basically interchangeable in their grafting recipe.
  • Apples (Fall) and Cherries (Summer) are both active for one season each, though Cherries have a slower growth rate.

Finally, the following base game plants are neither components nor products of any splicing "recipes":

  • Summer: Tomato, Blackberry
  • Fall: UFO Fruit
  • Fall/Winter: Onion
  • Winter: Spinach, Potato
  • Spring/Fall: Carrot, Mushroom
  • All Seasons: Trash Fruit, Growfruit, Forbidden Fruit of the Plantsim, Wolfsbane

Thoughts on the PA ban

I have such mixed feelings about the proscription of Palestine Action in the UK. I absolutely cannot stand the organisation itself -- and I'd said that even before the ban -- which has often come over as one of those self-indulgent middle-class "look at meeeee!" groups (see also Just Stop Oil). I'd go so far as to say PA has probably harmed the case by putting off so many moderate people, just as happened when fringes on Palestine marches started actively supporting the Iranian regime recently. It's also ludicrous to say, as I've already seen happen, that the ban on PA makes it "illegal to protest the genocide". That's ridiculous and no more true than saying the Provisional IRA's proscription made it illegal to protest against British forces' brutality in Northern Ireland during the Troubles.

What gives me pause is that, unlike for example the Provisional IRA, Palestine Action have not actually been violent in their actions. The best known thing was when they broke into an air base and trashed the engines of some planes. As far as I can see, all the other groups who have been proscribed -- PIRA, various neo-Nazi thugs, and indeed Hamas -- are actively violent or repressive. I tend to feel that in a democracy the bar for making it illegal even to express support for an organisation (and doing that with PA is now a criminal offence) should be extremely high. As it happens I don't want a US-style near-free-for-all when it comes to free speech. I wouldn't, for example, want to allow the level of commentary on ongoing trials that exists there.

But yeah. I deeply dislike PA and think they've done far more harm than good to their avowed cause. I also deeply dislike the arrogance of some on that slice of Palestinian protest who insist on pushing their way into so many other protests and marches (even some unrelated ones such as LGBT or disability-rights events) "because genocide". I'm deeply suspicious about these "grannies being arrested" stories, because I suspect that was what PA wanted to happen. As I've said before, it's also curious that so many of these people just happened to be against providing support for Ukraine. There's at least a suspicion that they just shout for anyone who's against Israel/the US/"the West" in the same way ultra-lefties lionised Stalin in the 1950s.

But even all that said, actually making it a criminal offence not just to join PA but to express support for them? However much I dislike them myself, that's where I get uneasy.

*gestures behind me* y'all seein' this shit in the USA? Ain't good.

Despite the dumpster fire, it's been a good break! Some things that happened:
  • Got my doctor's visit squared away.
  • Discovered, and have a project planned, for [community profile] iddyiddybangbang ("Vol, is it Takumi/Francis?" You best believe I'm still rotating them in my head nonstop)
  • Got into hiking, and have a major one planned! Will probably not post much about this due to it being PII.
  • Harvested + processed my cabbage and broccoli, then proceeded to plant an irresponsible amount of squash and sweet potatoes
  • Shot off fireworks (and had one zip right between my legs) for the 4th of July
  • Began practicing the Sabbath in earnest (on Sundays, I spend more time in prayer, put my phone in a drawer, and spend minimal time on chores and just spending time with Hubby. So far, that's meant lots of board games, naps, and long walks, which has been phenomenal.)
  • Learned how to embroider a few different kinds of flowers
  • Streamlined a couple of things at work and carved out a weird niche for myself.
  • Checked out [community profile] sunshine_revival and hoping to contribute to the challenges! Each post will be tagged as challenge: sunshine revival 2025 if you want to block more fandom specific posts.

Media things:
  • Almost done with Season 6 of Dr. Who! I have more complicated feelings about the whole cast - Rory grew on me as a character. The decision to make this random guy still be a random guy, but also an intensely devoted Protective Wife Guy was inspired, I just... wish it was for someone more than Amy? I love Amy a ton as a character, but there's just something weirdly one-sided about their relationship that takes me out of it. Either way, still phenomenal.
    • As a side note, Rory's actor has got the comfort hug down pat. One could write a whole essay on how good those hugs are (the way he puts his hand on the back of the other person's head, sort of knits his fingers in their hair just enough for it to look like it's a hug for him as much as the other person but not in a possessive way, how you can tell he's pressing the pads of his fingers into their scalp/back, the little "shh" noises, the way he adjusts his head and moves the other person's head to his shoulder/the crook of his neck and breathes in deeply - I'm very normal about it.)
  • Still relistening to DNDads and nearly screaming at the foreshadowing involved in Francis' early character arcs.
  • Deltarune: Hopelessly stuck on the midboss. My reaction time and patience just isn't where it needs to be for this thing. Susie is still the best girl.
  • Tried to watch All The President's Men, fell asleep 15 minutes in. Oops.
  • Finished a few books: Fatal Fried Rice, Cod, Moon Called, Live No Lies, Yuru Camp Vols. 12 and 13. All of them very solid books (Moon Called showed me the Omegaverse is not my thing, but I love the general ideas it has!) - Started Winter of Ice and Iron (a very heady and mildly confusing fantasy novel), Raw Dog (a nonfiction history book/memoir about hotdogs and also a road trip), and Subversive Sabbath (a religious book about the importance of taking a day of rest. As a chronic overworker, it's been enlightening, to say the least!). Looking to start Zer0es, a sci-fi thriller that's been billed as for people who are fans of Person of Interest and Leverage - some of my favorite TV shows ever.
  • On Day 85 of Hundred Line - haven't had much time to sit down and sink my teeth into a JRPG lately, but I'm so close I can almost taste the ending. I was shocked at the twist they did with Ima, but... glad... he's... um... okay?
Good break, but I missed you guys and journaling my thoughts down somewhere! And participating in fandom in some small, wonderful way. It's lovely to be back.

Summary: One for Sandman fans: I had a dream of Morpheus, who saw an invasion of earth that would go through the dreaming to reach target. Author’s Notes: People are always telling me to keep a dream diary, this is a concession.

Reccer's Notes: Raw dream content notoriously tends to be some-assembly-required narrative material, but in a 29 August 2010 LiveJournal post(2), Woosey described this downright jackpot he received from Dreamland: a cool premise complete with plot, grand spectacle, a firm grounding in the canon lore (note the smooth incorporation of the various Elseworlds Batman scenarios), implicit invitation to the audience (what would you have been doing during the Big Event?) and a clear if haunting resolution. A belated post for Saturday's waffle! I went to Walsall today -- I'd discovered that the whole thing could be done exclusively on Diamond buses, so a single £9 Network Day ticket covered the three buses each way. By no means the most beautiful journey I could make, but quite an interesting ride nevertheless. I just pottered around for my 2-3 hours in Walsall, but I did make sure to have lunch in the pleasant beer garden out back of the local Wetherspoon pub. (Steak and ale pudding with chips and mushy peas.) The front of said Spoons is my 365 photo for Saturday. St Matthew's Hall was originally built in the early 1830s as a subscription library, but that quickly failed commercially. Later the building was used as a courtroom, but it's been a pub for some years now.
