It has currently been around a week since The Owl House premiered one of its three final specials, to wrap up the series: Thanks To Them. And I still can't think, even vaguely, about the end of that special without my head starting to pound.

Hunter from The Owl House is one of my "the big four" fictotypes who I simply am, in the most literal sense of the word. I am these four characters "in the flesh," as the kids say. "In the real," even. I find it incredibly difficult to separate myself from these characters at all.

And it has always been difficult, being Hunter. I mean, the crew behind the show themselves love to joke about how much they use my character as a 'trauma punching bag', per say. (Ha ha ha, guys. Extremely funny and normal thing to say about a child character who is canonically an abuse victim.) But everything from before now, I could cope with. I could handle.

Is your fictomere nocturnal, diurnal, crepuscular, or something else entirely?

~

I mean, a lot of my whole Thing as Macaque was being something of the darkness. I definitely thrived more at night. Otherwise, I was a day person, unless you counted my insomnia as Hunter.

Recall a time where your fictomere had to be calm in the face of adversity.

~

My kintypes typically aren't exactly known for 'staying calm'. The main example I can think of who is able to do that, though, is Hunter; I was able to recognize that Luz posed no threat to me, after I was first unmasked in front of her. I was more analytical, in terms of combat. Being powerless in a world of magic will do that to you.

If you could hit the road with anyone from your source material (yes, including yourself), who would it be? Where would you go and what would you do?

~

To be honest, it would be a toss-up between Luz, Sal, or Mei. I feel like I'd get along with them great in this life!

What I'd do would depend on the person. With Luz, I'd wanna go to some nerdy anime or cartoon convention. I'd want to go to a concert with Sal (you know, in the alternate universe where there aren't currently any virus outbreaks), and I'd wanna go to an arcade or something similar with Mei!

Is there anything related to your identity that makes you feel afraid?

~

I become nervous about how my source self is perceived by fandom, in terms of fictionkinity. I know it doesn't actually matter, but whenever I see people talking about how much they hate my source self, it feels like they hate me, even when I know that's not rational. It's something that I'm trying to work on. More than anything, I'm afraid of my identity not being taken seriously, or people thinking that I am who I am by choice or that I take it lightly.

What is your most exciting noemata?

~

There are lots of different possible answers for this. My final battle against Gloria was very exciting as Bede, as well as my first few battles as a Gym Leader. All of the battles against Wukong as Macaque were super fun and adrenaline-fueled, of course, and playing with the Emerald Entrails was very fun and had me on edge as Hunter, and so on...

Compared to all of that, my most exciting memories as Travis as actually quite mundane. It was whenever Sal would bring me somewhere, like to get ice-cream. Or when I first dyed my hair. Doing tiny, tiny things to rebel.

I remember thinking, 'Loud music, too-sweet food and a pretty boy,' listing off all the things that I knew my father would hate for me to be enjoying... Apparently I was smiling or something, because Larry commented on it ('feels good to rebel, doesn't it?'). I told him to fuck off.

Does your fictomere have a favorite food? Is it a dish that can't be found on Earth? Would it be considered taboo or gross by today's human standards?

~

Well, as Travis, my favorite food was the school’s baloney sandwiches which, in the source material, was actually meat from… Ahem. Well, at least I’m pretty sure that it wasn’t that in my canon… (… Hopefully…)

… ANYWAYS, as for other kintypes…! I remember loving Toriel’s butterscotch-cinnamon pies as Chara, for which, thankfully, multiple fan-made recipes exist. I can’t say that any of them are exactly on the money for how it tasted, but, nonetheless, it’s very close… Baking it helps me feel closer to Toriel, too.

#4: What kind of weather does your source have? Is it very different from Earth, similar, or completely alien?

~

The only kintype that has anything that differs from our Earth’s weather significantly is Hunter from The Owl House. In the Boiling Isles, we had weather similar to the human realm’s weather, but more hostile. The boiling-hot rain is what usually comes to mind first for most people, of course, but, in general, all weather changes were considered plagues rather than actual ‘weather’. There were regular incidents of hail taking the forms of rocks, tornadoes made of gore and guts, cursed rainbows, and floods from the water from the Boiling Sea (which, as the name implies, is also boiling-hot).

#3: Is there a live-action movie or series based on your source? How do the actors and events match up with your noemata? Is CGI or practical effects necessary to represent the people and creatures from your source?

~

Yes, Detective Pikachu is a fabulous live-action take on the Pokemon world! Of course, given that the draw of the franchise is the creatures that don’t exist in our world, CGI and such is necessary, but I feel like the movie did an excellent job bringing the creatures from my memories to life.

I’m unable to speak of if the CGI is accurate to how I remember the world, though; all of my memories are remembered in a stylized way. I have no clue if this is common for those with fictotypes from an animated or video game source or not (I would love some community input on this!), but all of my memories are ‘in the style’ of Pokemon Twilight Wings (the animated miniseries based on the Galar region).

How closely is your identity aligned with canon events from your source?

~

It depends on which fictotype you're talking about; I'll discuss two examples on opposite ends of the spectrum.

On one end of the spectrum is my Bede canon, which is actually surprisingly canon-compliant. I mean, of course, what you see in the source is only half the story, as it's told from Gloria's point of view, and I sort of just get yoinked by my future grandma halfway through the game and then don't come back until the end. (Thanks, Miss Opal.) But, nonetheless, the times where I am present in canon, I am more or less word-for-word canon-compliant, except for two very small instances of mild changes in my phrasing. I don't conflate my fictotype's canon-compliance with "validity", for lack of a better word (and neither should you!), but it does feel a certain type of satisfying to know that what players are presented with is, more or less, the real me.

(On the other hand, though, this also means that, if players hate me; which a lot do; they also hate said 'real me'... But that's a discussion for another prompt, I'm sure.)

I love daily prompts and blogging my thoughts and the like, so I will try to respond to 1-3 prompts per day to work through the backlog! This'll be the prompt I'll do for tonight before I hit the hay.

What was the event that triggered your awakening? How did this process impact your life over the following weeks/months/year?

~

I discussed this in my introduction post, but I think I could go into more depth here.

Summary: He supposes that he should be grateful that he was a werewolf, and not something like a vampire; a creature which was hurt from contact with a cross or crucifix. Suddenly refusing to wear his usual cross necklace that he had worn regularly for years would be a lot more suspicious to his dad than his apparent constant hunger.

But it wasn't just regular food that Travis wanted to sink his teeth into.

Or: Being a monster as a metaphor for queerness.
